WE WILL SING was a night when Hudson Taylor became Simon & Garfunkel, Róisín O became Amy Winehouse, Mundy became Bob Marley, and Emma Wigglesworth became Nina Simone.


This was a night when Glen Hansard performed the Oscar-winning Falling Slowly with a string quartet and an all-star cast. His trusty Fender acoustic was passed around; from Danny O’Reilly to Gavin James to Matthew Devereaux to Mark Geary to Eoin Glackin. Every song was delivered with aplomb, while the linguistic mastery of spoken word artist Stephen James Smith also shone.


Those present knew they were witnessing a one-off gathering of remarkable musicians. Something that could happen only in Dublin, and only on Christmas Eve, when the city was closed and Whelan’s was theirs . . .
